'You call it freedom, and I call it anarchy'

Date: June 18, 2002 | 7 Rabi al-Akhir 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: feminism
That's from the lyrics of the nashid "The Veil", by Dawud Wharnsby Ali (listen to it).

The nashid is a great song in its own right, but I was reminded of the lyric because of the BBC Online article Web Gives a Voice to Iranian Woman. This is all about how Iranian woman have supposedly been liberated because now they can blog about boyfriends and sex. roll eyes Boyfriends and sex? You call that freedom? All these struggles for equality so that women can blog about boyfriends and sex? If that's what the West's idea of freedom is about, I'll give it a pass and wait for the real thing, thank you. Now if the women were using their blogs to talk about Islamic issues or current affairs, that might be worth getting excited about.

The story was featured on the Blogger front page, since it's about blogging.
