From an article1:
In seeking the deportation in 1987 of Hamide, Shehadeh and six other Palestinian immigrants allegedly associated with the PFLP, the Reagan administration's Justice Department invoked a provision of the Cold War-era McCarran-Walter Act, which barred membership in communist groups. But a lawsuit filed by the so-called L.A. 8 led a federal appeals court to declare the law an unconstitutional infringement of free speech, and Congress repealed it in 1990.All comments are copyright their authors

Subject: Re: Patriot Act Used In 16-Year-Old Deportation Case
Before slamming the Bush Administration exclusively, let's pause to consider that thirteen years have passed since the law was repealed, and the government has been hounding those guys all that time. I do believe there were a couple of other Presidents in that time frame besides the curent one. Of course they didn't care anything for the Constitution either.

This is all true, but Bush seems to be out to set a record for persecuting them. That's what's so disturbing to me about the Bush Administration. It's building on the work of its predecessors (particularly Clinton with the ATEDPA and the IIRIRA) but seems to go to extremes in zeal and secretiveness.
