Arabic text of ayah

Wa kaayyin min qaryatin 'atat 'an amri rabbiha wa rusulihi fa hasabnaha hisaban shadidan wa 'adhdhabnaha 'adhaban nukran

How many populations that insolently opposed the Command of their Lord and of His messengers, did We not then call to account, to severe account, and We imposed on them an exemplary Punishment

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

They rebelled, rejected and arrogantly refused to obey Allah and they would not follow His Messengers
