Wa allai yaisna mina al-mahidi min nisaikum ini irtabtum fa 'iddatuhunna thalathatu ashhurin wa allai lam yahidna wa ulatu al-ahmali ajaluhunna an yada'na hamlahunna wa man yattaqi Allaha yaj'al lahu min amrihi yusran
And such of your women who have passed having monthly courses, the prescribed period for them, if you have doubt, is three months. And (also) for those who do not have them yet. And for those who bear (life), their term is when they deliver. And who is in awe of Allah, He will make their affairs easy
The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:
Allah the Exalted clarifies the waiting period of the woman in menopause. And that is the one whose menstruation has stopped due to her older age. Her Iddah is three months instead of the three monthly cycles for those who menstruate, which is based upon the Ayah in (Surat) Al-Baqarah. [see 2:228] The same for the young, who have not reached the years of menstruation. Their Iddah is three months like those in menopause... Allah says: the pregnant woman's Iddah ends when she gives birth, whether in the case of divorce or death of the husband, according to the agreement of the majority of scholars of the Salaf and later generations. This is based upon this honorable Ayah and what is mentioned in the Prophetic Sunnah
