Surah al-Aala ayah 17

Date: November 09, 2002 | 3 Ramadan 1423 Hijriah
Arabic text of ayah

Wa al-akhiratu khayrun wa abqa

Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

No wise man could prefer the fleeting life of the world to life everlasting. Ahmad ibn Hanbal reported that the Prophet said, "This world is the abode of one who has no home in the Herafter; this world is the wealth of one who has no wealth in the Hereafter. Those who indulge only in the pursuit of worldly gains are fools". The Prophet said, "One who loves the life of the world does harm to himself in the Hereafter. One who loves the Hereafter does harm to his life in this world. Give preference to the everlasting Hereafter over this fleeting world" (Al-Musnad, Imam Ahmad)
