Wa layalin 'ashr

And the ten nights

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

The ten nights mentioned in the verse refer to the first ten nights of the month of Dhu'l-Hijjah. Bukhari reported that the Prophet said, "No worship is superior to worship done in the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah." The Companions asked, "Not even jihad in the way of Allah?" He said, "Not even that, except for a man who goes out for jihad with his life and wealth and does not return with either of them."
