Surah al-Fatiha ayah 1

Date: May 25, 2002 | 13 Rabi al-Awwal 1423 Hijriah
Arabic text of ayah

Bismillahi ar-Rahman ar-Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The following are excerpts of commentary on this ayah, based on Tafsir Ibn Kathir and other sources:

"With the Name of Allaah" meaning I start with every name that belongs to Allaah, the Exalted. This is because the word 'name' is singular and in the genitive form and therefore it includes all of the Beautiful Names. The action that the servant intends to do has been omitted in the sentence in order to generalise the statement [known as the basmallaah]. Hence no matter what the servant intends to do, the basmallaah is applicable to it.

Therefore it is as if the servant is saying 'I seek the help of Allaah with every Name of His, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful in the action I am about to do.'

Dear Student of the Quran

I am impressed with what you are doing here. I am a Muslim who is trying to rejuvenate my own faith with a deeper understanding of the faith.

Your site will give me the opportunity to link back to the ayahs ( I assume you are giving tranliteration in the same order of the al-Furqan?) and hopefully provide in depth tafsir and relate to history, hadeeths, as well as to relate the quran the present day situation.

May Allah Bless you for your work!
