The Obligation for the Muslim to Learn Surah al-Fatiha

Date: May 28, 2002 | 16 Rabi al-Awwal 1423 Hijriah
All Muslims must memorize Surah al-Fatiha in Arabic if they are able to. This is because it must be recited in each rak'at of each salat. This is the view of the majority of the scholars.

Even if you don't know how to read Arabic, you can learn to recite Surah al-Fatiha by listening to a recording of someone else reciting it and copying how they pronounce it. Two online resources are Islamcity Synchronised Quran and Reciter.org.

The following are some hadiths that show the obligation of reciting Surah al-Fatiha:

There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book.
[Saheeh Bukhaaree [Eng. Trans. 1/404 no. 723], Saheeh Muslim [Eng. Trans. 1/214 no. 771]]

Whosoever performs a prayer in which he does not recite the Mother of the Book then it is deficient, it is deficient, it is deficient, it is incomplete.
[Saheeh Muslim [Eng. Trans. 1/215 no. 775]]

The prayer is not valid in which the Mother of the Qur'aan is not recited.
[Saheeh Muslim [Eng. Trans. 1/215 no. 772]]
