About Podcasting

This blog offers an RSS 2.0 podcast feed1. What's that? An RSS feed is a way for you to receive the entries in this blog without having to actually visit it to check for new content. Instead, you can subscribe to the feed using a RSS reader (also called newsreader or aggregator). When new entries are posted, you will see them come up in your RSS reader and can read them there.

Sometimes people upload multimedia files (audio or video) to their blog entries. Depending on how they have their feed configured, these files may or may not be accessible from the RSS reader. You can always visit the blog to download the multimedia files from the link in the entry itself, but podcasting is a way to distribute the files to people without them having to visit the blog.

There are several ways to have podcasts (multimedia files in blog entries) delivered to you. The simplest way is if your regular RSS reader supports podcasting as the free, web-based reader Bloglines does. A blog entry that has a podcast file available will appear in Bloglines with a link that says "Enclosure". Click this link to download or play the file on your computer using your default media player software.

Another way to receive podcasts is through a media player such as iTunes that supports podcasting. Inside of iTunes, go to Advanced > Subscribe to Podcast and enter the URL of the podcast feed. iTunes will download the most recent podcast file found in the feed so that you can listen to it in iTunes. You can configure iTunes to check regularly for new podcast files and download them automatically.

Which method should you use? For Clark Blog, the podcast entries usually include text with links to other resources. You won't be able to read this in iTunes, you just get the podcast files to listen to. So I recommend that you either use Bloglines or another podcast-enabled RSS reader as your main reader, or you use both Bloglines and iTunes. With Bloglines you can read the blog entries and follow the links for more information; if you want to easily store and play the podcast files, you can download them automatically with iTunes. Another reason to use iTunes if if you would like to listen to these files on your iPod. You can set up iTunes to automatically download each new podcast file as it appears and automatically sync it to your iPod when you connect the iPod to your computer. This is a great way to listen on the go!

Note that some of the podcast files offered here are Windows Media files, which iTunes doesn't support currently, although the more recent files are mp3's. The podcast files are videos and audio of Clark's media appearances, primarily on the Fox News Channel.

1 The RSS 1.0 and Atom feeds are also coded for enclosures, but not all feedreaders may support this. Use of the RSS 2.0 feed is recommended.

Don't we owe it to ourselves to be all that we can be as a people of faith? To reach out and offer hope and opportunity to the least among us? To preach peace and prosperity and to live equality and justice? (source)
