purchasing other people's cell phone records
There are some companies that allow you to purchase the cell phone records of anybody that you know the number for. You can see all of their calls and the numbers of the people they talked to.
John Aravosis of AmericaBlog obtained Clark's cell phone records to show how easy this is. Note that he informed Clark that he would be posting this on his blog. The story was on several major networks by the evening (CBS, NBC which features it second after a commercial and shows a screenshot of Aravosis's blog).
Wes Clark, Jr, reports that his father is "pissed and plans on suing the company out of existence".
Are you pissed off too? Sign a petition to Congress asking them to make this illegal.
Background: The Washington Post initially reported on this in July 2005 but nothing further transpired, although Democratic Congressman Edward Markey tried to get some action on it in November.. On January 6, 2006, the Chicago Sun-Times published the story that inspired Aravosis's first blog entry on the issue.
Later, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid writes (PDF) to the FEC about it and Cingular is suing.
Some later coverage includes: Newsday, UPI, MSNBC, Chicago Sun-Times, Consumer Affairs
