Event Brings Area Businesses and Public Safety Officials Together to Discuss How Wireless Technology Meets Communications Needs During Emergencies Critical
Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:NXTL - News) today hosted its Wireless Business Solutions Forum in Indianapolis to highlight the latest wireless technology and its role in business, public safety and emergency preparedness. General Wesley Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, addressed the importance of improving public and private partnerships and interoperable communications during emergencies. In addition, several wireless technology providers demonstrated the latest wireless solutions for public safety organizations and industries such as transportation, construction healthcare and manufacturing to more than 200 Indiana business and public safety officials.
One area that the forum addressed was interoperability - the idea that public safety officials must have the ability to easily manage and directly connect with one another through reliable and secure communications regardless of agency, jurisdiction or department. In addition to Clark, who is now vice chairman at James Lee Witt Associates, Matt Chappell, Nextel's district manager for Indiana, also addressed attendees.
"It's imperative to expand the dialogue about interoperable communications among public safety officials," said General Clark, underscoring the immediate need to address these issues. "It's at the very core of emergency preparedness."
Nextel is hosting a series of Wireless Business Solutions Forums around the country designed to educate government, public safety, business, and education officials. Nextel offers businesses and public safety organizations a wide range of wireless solutions including Nextel's mobile phones with global positioning system (GPS) capabilities, Nationwide Direct Connect® walkie-talkie service, and email and text messaging services, all available on Nextel's all-digital voice and packet data network.
